Fake car survey on Dunsmuir Viaduct?

(the part about the survey may have been debunked... stay tuned)

The people who oppose bike lanes are doing a bit of a dirty tricks campaign... maybe.

These folks in the video were out pretending to be working for the city, acted a little shady when questioned, and yesterday were suggesting that "the city is thinking of getting rid of the bike lanes."

Vancouver Sun articles critical of the bike lanes are being patrolled by comment deletionists, who report pro-bike comments as if they are spam, abuse, or illegal. Three reports is enough to hide a comment until a human editor can catch up with the situation, long enough for the article to drift off the front page, so that casual readers won't see any bike-lane support.

By the way, the criminal code says:
http://laws.justice.gc.ca/eng/C-46/FullText.html

Punishment
(2) Everyone who commits an offence under subsection (1)

(a) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term of not more than five years; or

Indeed, the city is actually supposed to be counting cars, for a study at removing the viaducts.

Well I sure wasnt wearing any gear nor did I impersonate a city worker, BUT.. I did go down and count bikes on Dunsmuir a couple of weeks back, just for interest's sake. Over about an hour, midday Saturday, I counted 1 bike per minute. 1 bike per minute. Now admittedly, it was a weekend, and it wasnt sunny but it wasnt raining either, so although I know a few people in town really want bike lanes for a lot of reasons, the disruption to traffic and the cost to create a third and duplicate public transport system ( Car on road, Translink, bike on road routes) is not at this time worth the expense. (25 million for bike infrastructure budgeted over next couple of years while schools are closing, fire service is being reduced and the city has a 24 million dollar illegal deficit.

What disruption to traffic? Bikes are traffic! What a ridiculous comment.

1 per minute is pretty good. Did you compare that rate to the car lanes on the same road and the sidewalk? Now that would be interesting. I wish I could get the car-only road network in front of my house shut down because the rate of "traffic" (actually large metal boxes that block people's safe passage) were less than 1/minute.

Also, you've got no idea what road expenses are, do you? $25million, though a huge number, is a paltry sum in the world of road infrastructure. Road infrastructure is crazy for costs. One of those light poles is worth $30K or more. Bike improvements are usually being done not because the government is especially altruistic or freedom loving (as in actually allowing people to bike with some safety) but because it is a bargain compared to everything else and they are in cost cutting mode. If you're actually interested in efficiency or cost cutting instead of making ridiculous ignorant remarks implying cyclists are a burden to the road you should be yelling for more bike improvements and faster because what we have now is purely token.
